I use the sidebar for my bookmarks. It was working fine , then I left the computer for an hour and when I came back I had no bookmarks, so I opened the sidebar and checked bookmarks. It comes up but only stays about 10 secs. I go back to sidebar and bookmarks are no longer checked.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

You must have an extension installed that modified the default action of the Sidebar, which is supposed to stay open until the user closes it. And if the Bookmarks Side bar was open when you close Firefox, it will be open the next time Firefox is opened. At least that is is how it has always worked for me.
