How do I stop my Firefox from updating on its own?

more options

My software company relies on ESR 45 as the browser of choice to view our software. We have had a recent surge of customers complaining about their Firefox updating on its own to ESR 52. We have instructed our users to uninstall Mozilla Maintenance Service, and check the Never check for updates box in Options/Advanced/Updates, but they are still getting updated. Many of the updates seem to be happening overnight, but there is also an issue where checking your Firefox version by going to Help/About Firefox, causes the system to update itself as well. Please advise if there is a way to keep our users on ESR 45 permanently.

Also shut down; Use a background service to install updates

Thank you for your feedback FredMcD. We are instructing our users to uninstall the Mozilla Maintenance Service, which removes that issue. Got anything else?

It goes without saying that this will become a bigger and bigger security problem as unpatched vulnerabilities accumulate. How long do you need users to stay on 45.9.0esr and how in good conscience can you tell them to do that "permanently"?

If the Update settings are being ignored, do the customers have IT management software that patches Firefox independently?

As for the Help > About Firefox dialog, if updates are set to "let me choose" (my setting) then this will download a new version but not automatically install it. I don't know what it does if automatic updates are disabled; I've never used that setting.
