Why the master password window is opening when there is already one?

Everytime I start a Firefox window the first time there is a certain delay, after the the delay Firefox ask me for my master password. That's fine! But if I start Firefox and move to a website which require a password which is stored in the Firefox password manager before the end of the delay, Firefox ask me instant for the master password. The problem is, if I start to enter my master password it often happens, that at the end of the first mentioned delay and in my writing process a second window with the master password opens. Isn't it possible to deactivate the second master password window if there is already one? Would love that feature and would improve my usability experience. Thank you so much, for what you do! Richard

Long story short: this is the original bug that you may want to have look at, as well as related ones. As for why it still isn’t fixed, I assume this is because there is some logic behind it and therefor less need to (i.e. not all users experience the issue) - Firefox may attempt to access a password at statup with some other reason than the page you visit afterwards does. For instance, in Thunderbird, this does not occur if "Check for new messages at startup" is not checked. In Firefox, it could be an add-on, plugin or perhaps even the Sync service if you use it. You might be able to find that out by disabling any of them and by doing so, eliminate the first prompt in another way, so you won’t need the add-on.

For info: the add-on has not been migrated to WebExtensions yet, but it seems to be in progress (see this bug.)

If you are happy with a solution, could you mark either one above?

You seem to be using Firefox 37, which is very old, and less secure. The issue of multiple password prompts could have been fixed by now and no longer occur in recent versions. I say could, as there were multiple bugs for it due to several circumstances, such as when using a proxy, or FIPS, or more.

So in short, can you reproduce the issue in a recent Firefox version, let’s say 55?

Hi, don't worry, the version is not true. I'm running version 52.3 on Debain 8 stable. This are just fake informations for privacy reasons. Sorry for the confusion!

Hi   !

Would you consider giving this add-on a try  ?

I figured that would be possible :) but in that case, does it also happen if you omit that fake info?

If so, I can point you to bugs, but a short answer is that it could still be an issue, so it may be best to install the StartupMaster add-on to work around it.

Oh, this would work also, thanks.

But maybe Mozilla should change this by default. I don't understand the benefit from this behaviour?
