Right after updating to Thunderbird 52.8.0, my password list seems to have been erased. Thunderbird is not asking for password and timing out when checking for incoming messages. For outgoing messages, I get the following message. "Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail: Could not get password for smtpout.secureserver.net. The message was not sent."

What version did you use before Thunderbird 52.8.0?

Did you have FIPS enabled? I think this option was silently dropped somewhere in the 52 releases cycle, because of changes in the build system.

I'm not sure about the version before Thunderbird 52.8.0. FIPS was not enabled specifically and not using a master password either.

If my password list is empty, can I assume there is no way to retrieve.

Perhaps your Firewall does not realise that the updated Thunderbird is the same as the old one.

  • Exit Thunderbird.
  • Access Firewall which may be part of your Anti-Virus program.
  • Locate thunderbird and set to allow.
  • If already set to allow, block tb and ok it. Then repeat action to allow thunderbird.

Do you use a product like CCleaner or other program which cleans up temp files etc.? If yes, it is possible it has erased the file containing the passwords. Suggest you do not allow the program to have access to thunderbird folders.

Do you have anything in this location: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > Security' > 'Paswords' tab click on 'Saved Passwords' button.

Restart Thunderbird Does it prompt for password? If yes, enter password and select checkbox for TB Manager to remember the password.
