I have a verizon.net email account at AOL. AOL now requires use of a one-time-use "app password" to sign in from Thunderbird. This does work but it seems like now I will have to go through this process (going to AOL web mail and requesting a new app password) every time I reboot my computer or restart Thunderbird. Is this true?

No, the process is to give you a password for use only for one email setup. Thunderbird uses that as your password. If you were to setup more PCs, you would need to get another one-time password for each PC. This process of providing passwords for each setup is becoming more common with email providers.

David, thanks for your reply. You are correct. I don't have to keep requesting new one time app passwords; got a little panicked in the midst of changing a number of different password. But I don't know why I coudn't just continue to use the same log in credentials I use for logging in to the AOL/Verizon.net web mail. That used to work just fine. Seems like just another dose of gratuitous aggravation.

It seems to be a transition happening to many users, as it seems daily I see people needing a separate password for their PC. It is supposed to be tighter security; at least, that's what I hear.

@hpete - I'm also having a problem with one of my verizon.net accounts. I tried re-entering my app password, entering my "main" password, and then changing my app password and entering that new app password. I am still getting the error message. Oddly, I've been able to receive a message, and send a message, in between some of these error messages popping up. This problem just started for me today, July 1.
