How do I set default search engine?
when I type something in the address bar to search for it, I get the message:
Firefox can't find the file at jar:file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesebay.

Firefox has two address bars at the top. One is the regular URL box to the left (showing the page you're on right now) and to the right is the second, which is actually the search box. There are (or should be) icons. Click on the icon you see and a list will appear. A number of search engines are shown and Google should be in this list. Choose it. This becomes your default search engine and when you type a term in the regular address space, it will open at a Google search page for that word.
Yes, I know this, but I used to (before this last update) be able to use the URL box for searching as well. It's not a big deal, as things go, but i'd still like to be able to do it.
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

No dice. Even tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it. Same error message. What confuses me is the mention of chrome in the error message... Also what's jar and omni.jar! ?
The file omni.jar is a ZIP archive in the Firefox program folder. Firefox uses that ZIP archive to store a lot of XUL and JavaScript files and other files efficiently and load then faster on startup.
We have seen this error reported as caused by the "Ask.com Toolbar" or the "ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker Toolbar" or the Fox-it toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions).
