FF 8.0.1 is running on this machine with WinXP SP-2. For the last 30 days or so the FF desktop shortcut icon disappears from the desktop every few days. After it is re-created and put on desktop again, it stays for a couple of days and than disappears again. There is only one user on this machine. Is it possible that some nefarious malware is trying to prevent FF from being used on this machine? Is this happening to other users?

Are you running any cleanup software like CCleaner on a scheduled base?

No, I am not running any cleanup software like CCleaner on a scheduled basis. This machine does have McAfee AV software installed, but that was installed a year ago and the problem of the disappearing shortcut began about 30 days ago. Since McAfee is constantly updating, it is possible that McAfee is now removing the shortcut, but it seems unlikely.
