Mozilla Firefox update NAG can't be disabled
I am being constantly being nagged to update Firefox to the latest version despite setting options to "Never check for updates". I reset the option but Firefox ignores it and returns to, "Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them." I used to allow the updates to download and install immediately but the newer versions were not compatible with some of my add-ons which forced me to completely re-configure the browser. This is not only inconvenient but annoying as hell. What is it going to take to allow me to control of my own computer. Incidentally in about:config, all the update options are set to "False" but it doesn't make any difference, Firefox continues to nag, nag, nag. In fact, as I was writing this, I was "reminded" several times to do the update. Nag, nag, nag. Give me back control of my browser!

You are running firefox 19, and pretty much all add-ons that work in Firefox 19 will work with Firefox 20. You really should update ASAP as there are multiple security holes in Firefox 19 that have been fixed in Firefox 20.
Thanks for your reply but my query wasn't answered completely. First of all, "pretty much" doesn't get it. I would like to back up my system before doing updates of any kind. Automated installs are not acceptable. Secondly, the sense of urgency you cite makes me nervous. Lastly, why don't the options to disable the NAGs work as they should? Is this one of the things "fixed" in the update?
Just as I thought, 20.0.1 wiped out several of my add-ons, then, although it loaded my Google home page, it was immediately hijacked by the WELCOME page. Every time I started the browser after the update, it opened BOTH Google and the WELCOME page, with the latter on top. It wouldn't change either. After that I reverted to version 19 but my add-ons still weren't compatible. Reverted to version 18 and my add-ons were STILL incompatible. I'm getting pretty pissed at Mozilla. Why can't they update the security without it affecting everything else?
