Why does update plugin page never come back from checking my status? It just spins.

Using Firefox 22 on Acer Aspire on a dial-up internet connection. Computer alerted me that it could not view e-card and needed to update a plug-in/add-on and went to the Mozilla plugin check and updates page. It just spins, forever, without reporting back the status of my plugins. Tried clearing cache but made no difference.

What usually happens is that the page loads with the plugin list(s) blank, and as information is retrieved it slots them under up-to-date, out-of-date, and don't-know.

I don't know whether you ran into a temporary glitch, or whether the specific missing or outdated plugin was an issue.

Does it work any better to just load the page directly from a link?

If it's still not working for you, could you try the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). Your plugins will still be active and available for research. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?
