Helvetica install has changed my font appearance, but I can't change it, or uninstall to change either. What do I do?

I installed Helvetica Neue family and now my Yahoo, and some other pages (not all) show a bold Helvetica font. I tried changing the font settings, but when I tell it what to show, the images on Yahoo (trash can, envelope, etc) are unrecognized. I tried uninstalling the fonts, but my computer wont uninstall all the Helvetica fonts installed. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

It's possible that those websites prefer Helvetica Neue but when you didn't have it, they used Arial instead.

To confirm the font used for part of a page, you can use the Inspector. Right-click the text and choose Inspect Element (Q). This should open a panel showing HTML source code on the left, and style rules on the right. If you click the Fonts tab above the style rules, Firefox should display the details of the font the page is using. Is it Helvetica Neue or regular Helvetica?

I'm not sure there is an easy way to force Firefox to ignore one font, but I think I have seen suggested workarounds in other threads. The trick will be finding them...

Note that we have seen a lot of issues with the Helvetica fonts on Windows, so you may want to reconsider using (installing) Helvetica fonts.

Note that you need to allow web pages to choose their fonts because otherwise Firefox won't display images (icons) that are supplied by a downloadable font.

You can right-click on a web page and select "Inspect Element" to open the Inspector (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer).

  • You can check the font used for selected text in the Font tab in the right pane of the Inspector.

You can also check other parameters.

Note that Firefox may display a bold font if you zoom the page too much or set a large minimum font size.
