I run a web app that works in K-12 schools. Why is firefox's camera is not working on latest release, even when it's enabled on computers?
Firefox was working fine before, but the latest release is messing with our web app. Any ideas why computer cameras are not working, even when it's enabled on computers?

Hi, not enough information. No idea of Software, Security Software, Extensions being used nor information about the Permissions.
As this is K-12 should not you be asking the Administrator or Tech Support for this information and setup info ?
Each of these things varies from school-to-school, so that's why I'm not more specific. Mozilla worked for 4 years without any issues across all school sites, then you pushed an update and it doesn't work across any. Meaning that nothing on the specific devices changed. Standard permissions; standard software on the computers. App works on Chrome and other browsers without issue.
Two types of answers that would be actually helpful:
1) If Mozilla's latest roll-out has a requirement for what software it uses in order to enable the webcam please list those
2) If others are having the same issue (or maybe even solved the problem) that would be helpful
Obviously I'll also ask school administrators, but this seems like a Mozilla issue not a hardware/software issue.
do you get any error messages?
I do get a flashing red camera icon (I'll attach the image). But the webcam on the computers is showing a green light as if it's working. I saw a similar thread before I posted this one, in case that's helpful (link below) but I couldn't figure out if any of those solutions actually work.
Please name the camera. Will be using search term in Google : Firefox your camera name
Will ignore anything before Nov 14 2017 as that is when Quantum came online.
Since your not posting from the system we have no idea what your version of Firefox your running. This is critical information. Organizations should be running Firefox ESR :
You need to come up with info we can work with please.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/enterprise/ https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ current version is 60.2.1esr is it 32bit or 64bit With out knowing information you have not provided. Very difficult to do anything. So please supply the version number of Firefox we are discussing which can be found in Help --About.
edit: version correction from 60.0.1esr to 60.2.1esr

I have the issue on both 60.2.1esr (64-bit), and on 62.0.2 (64-bit)
The URL you supplied is of no reference to what we are discussing here.
Every system is so individual that what works on one does not mean another. Video Driver Corruption is not something that you can figure out unless enough back and forth to suggest that. Or that your making the question with the system and sharing the data with Support.
What you got so far would be : Refresh Firefox Reinstall Firefox, Update your Video Card Drivers and try Disable Hardware Acceleration
Will start with test in the system that has the problem : SAFE MODE
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
- all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
- default theme is used (no persona)
- userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
- default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
- Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
- hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Performance > Uncheck to view)
- plugins are not affected
- preferences are not affected
TEST''''is issue still there ?
If is not then use 2nd URL above.
The top one : Refresh but Note that this does more than uninstalling and re-installing does. Normal uninstalling does not remove some preferences which may have become corrupt. Please Refresh but do this 1st:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
then
Then there is : a Fresh reinstall which I can not say to do as no idea if in Release Edition or ESR which a school should be on.
uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer
Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 62.0.2 with a Full Version Installer
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Search using Google with terms Firefox (the camera name and version) the issue.
