After updating Firefox to release 4.0 I can no longer see the closed lock, symbol of encripted page, when going on supposely encrypted pages, used without any problem in the past. Since I am no longer make sure whether I can provide personal information, I have stopped supplying them altogether but this prevents from logging on sites where passwords are required.

Please advise how I can make sure that a page is still encrypted when in use.

Best regards.

L. Russo

buddy, this is just display problem, when you access a ssl-encrypted site, their would be a blue mark ahead of the url address like somewhat starting with https://blah~blah~blah, so whether it is encrypted ? check the url! see if it is starting with https://, and don't believe in "closed lock" icon or somewhat, ok?

In Firefox 4 you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.
The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server.
So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL.
The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the How do I tell if my connection to a website is secure? on the left end of the location bar.

Tried and it works well on the laptop in the office. It is a different story on the one at home where the status bar remains blank. Even when loading at opening, it no longer loads the home page. Might I have messed up something in the setting when trying to fix the "padlock" problem?

Thanks for your help.

What did you do to fix the "padlock" problem ?

I went to the menu, "Web developer", "Character encoding" and tried auto-dected and Western type. I have also tried "Start private browsing" and this should be all but I am not 100 % sure because I went to the main menu "Tools", "Options" and check the settings.

Thanks.
