Why is FireFox reinstalling itself without asking me?

I'm using version 24 on both my desktop and laptop computer. In the past 2 weeks Firefox has updated itself without asking me from version 24 to version 24. Yes I know that sounds silly. What happens next is not silly. After doing these unasked updates the new version of Firefox now has Tiles on the screen. I HATE tiles and need some way other then using MS WIN7 recovery and restore feature.

A bigger problem is this!!! The update not only closes all my open tabs. BUT it also deletes my BookMarks!!!!!! It is like it's doing a complete uninstall and then reinstall. There must be some way to restore only FireFox instead of doing a Windows recovery-restore and getting my bookmarks back. Both my computers have done this. My laptop has done it once, but my desktop is on it's second unappreciated reinstall. I receive no advance warning about this automatic change but I noticed something wasn't right when doing a powerup the computer's do a restart. Then I know I'm screwed. Did I mention how much I hate tiles?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Does this happen after you have rebooted the computer?

Hi there,

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Hope this helps!

I fixed i by first saving my bookmarks and then completely removing FireFox and and deleting some remaining files pertaining to FF. Then I downloaded FF and installed it. Now that error is gone. What's funny is that my desktop had the same problem. Not once but twice and both times doing a system restore worked correctly both times, but the loss of my bookmarks. I have them backed up so that was no problem. The desktop didn't have the same problem my notebook did. OH well I am extremely pleased with the help offered here and I am so happy to have FireFox back up and running!

Thanks George
