I have a pop up that is attempting to get me to update my windows viewer or my browser. It only appears when I clink a link. The popup appears in ad format, by that I mean that the window has text saying it is an ad.

I am using Firefox 25.0 and have uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail.

You may have an unwanted extension that is injecting that ad. Try this:

Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that restore links to normal behavior?
