My computer locks up while using Pale Moon at Yahoo Mail and Flickr

Hello.

I was hoping for some kind of an explanation for something I am experiencing almost daily. I tried to list everything that happens and everything I am doing.

I am running Pale Moon with Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. About 20 minutes after I first open my browser, my computer locks up for anywhere from 15 seconds to maybe 2 minutes. It always happens when I use either Yahoo! Mail or Flickr (a Yahoo! site). After this lockup ends, I don’t have that issue again until the next day. I use CCleaner after I use my browser to delete history, cached data, etc.

I was wondering if something at these sites is causing Pale Moon to do something. I am asking this about Pale Moon because it is based on FireFox. This lockup used to be worse/longer with FireFox.

One thing that sometimes helped me avoid this lockup was to disable the Shockwave Plug-in and set it to “Ask to Activate”. I still get the lockup. But, every once in awhile I don’t get the lockup. (Maybe this setting isn’t affecting anything. But, it also keeps a lot of ads from appearing, which isn’t too bad.) Is interacting with the Yahoo sites causing Pale Moon to look for updates for something it needs to interact with Yahoo sites?

I can’t open Windows Task Manager to see if something is taking up a lot of memory because my whole computer locks up. I am guessing that this could also be a Vista issue. But, I can’t afford to upgrade my computer or operating system right now.

I use CCleaner after I use my browser to delete history, cached data, etc. Am I deleting something with CCleaner that the Yahoo sites keep replacing? Is Yahoo looking for something like the location of the WiFi server I am using?

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. I am using Pale Moon because IE is way too slow. Chrome crashes. FireFox was OK. But, that longer lockup caused me to look for an alternative. Pale Moon works best for me. I tried Opera, too. But, it changed something in my directory, which I didn't like one bit.

I think I may have found what is causing this. I kept track of when the lockup was occurring. It didn't occur at a set time. It was happening after a certain amount of time passed after I started up my computer in the morning.

I think it is actually Windows Update Service checking for updates. The reason I say this is that, a few times after the lockup, my computer started downloading updates. My Windows Update Service is set to check for updates with a delayed start.

Hope this helps someone else.

Hi k_drive:

Yes, Pale Moon is based upon Mozilla source code, however, we do not support it here at SUMO. Pale Moon has it's own dedicated forum

I, myself, don't do extensive troubleshooting on anything other than Firefox but I can give it a look-see.

Can you give me your troubleshooting information?

Hi Ken,

It looks like you replied to the e-mail that notifications@su.m.o sent you and you actually patched your response through to my e-mail. Weird...Never had that happen before. Might file a bug on that.

Anyway, I'll post the link to your thread here so you can come back and actually comment your troubleshooting info since I cannot see anything. Here's the link to reply back to me:

Can you re-submit your troubleshooting information but paste it in the comment box at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/994543?

Note that you should not use CCleaner to clear anything in Firefox as it can cause issues sometimes and because Firefox can clear its own History and Cache just fine.

Probably note relevant but I notice that Flash is outdated ( Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0 ). You might want to upgrade to Flash 13.

Have you tried opening the sites in Safe Mode? Do the lockups still occur there?

  • hold the SHIFT key while double clicking the Pale Moon icon on your desktop.
  • Navigate to the sites that are you having problems and see if they still act up.
