Instead of using a link in the MSN page to make it your home page, try using one of the techniques in this support article: How to set the home page.

Some users have accidentally lost their home page and add-ons by using the Refresh feature during their update. This can happen when you see a prompt that Firefox is starting slowly and you can speed it up by restoring some default settings. If you click that button, your Firefox settings folder is moved to your desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. Do you see anything like that? If so, I suggest hanging onto it for a few weeks in case you notice anything else missing. Feel free to ask any questions about rescuing data from that folder.

Let's start with this;

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display. Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

Thanks! Easy to follow directions and a simple solution. Always good to learn something new! I do have a folder on my desktop marked old firefox data and yes I will hang onto it. I also lost my sidebar menu of bookmarks but was able to restore those through trial and error  :)

These can also help out.

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Settings Guard for Firefox {web link} Detects and resets changes to settings that are frequently done by add-ons and application installers.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.
