What kind of error message is Firefox displaying, or does the page load blank or simply not load at all? If you can provide more detail, that would be helpful.

Some users are having trouble making a secure connection to Google, and various other sites. If that is the issue, often there is a code in the page that is helpful for troubleshooting. It is in parentheses and (separated_by_underscore_characters). Depending on the situation, the error page may have a Technical Details section you need to expand to see the code.

In some cases, Firefox fails to make secure connections because it is not set up to work with your security software. If you use Avast, AVG, BitDefender, ESET, or Kapsersky, that would be useful to know if you have this problem with numerous secure (HTTPS) sites.

why won't google.com load in firefox? The error says:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). (Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

I use Bitdefender, but google.com was previously working, prior to recent windows updates.

Hmm, I don't think BitDefender would usually cause the ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap error.

How are you connecting to the internet when this error occurs? Are you using any proxies, for example, on a work network or a company VPN?

If you get the same error on my test page, we can use that to investigate further:

https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php

Is there the same error? Toward the bottom does the page have an "I understand the risk" section? If you expand that section, you should find an Add Exception button. You don't need to complete the process of adding an exception (I suggest not adding one until we know this isn't a malware issue) but you can use the dialog to view the information that makes Firefox suspicious.

Click Add Exception, then View. If View is not enabled, try the Get Certificate button first. Then in the Certificate Viewer, look at the "Issued by" section. What do you find there, and/or under Certificate Hierarchy? I have attached a screen shot for comparison.

If you can't inspect the certificate via "I Understand the Risks" then try this:

Open the "Add Security Exception" window by pasting this chrome URL in the Firefox location/address bar and check the certificate:

  • chrome://pippki/content/exceptionDialog.xul

In the location field of this window type or paste the URL of the website.

  • retrieve the certificate via the "Get certificate" button
  • click the "View..." button to inspect the certificate in the Certificate Viewer

You can inspect details like the issuer and the certificate chain in the Details tab of the Certificate Viewer. Check who is the issuer of the certificate. If necessary then you can attach a screenshot that shows the certificate viewer.
