That's it in a nutshell. I thought it might be hiding in the customize page but it wasn't. Basically I want to be able to delete all the New Tab thumbnails with one keystroke. I think I can get into that with the cog wheel options but not seeing the cog makes that impossible.

Thanks!

Type about:customizing<enter> in the address bar. In the new window, look for the icon. When you find it, hold down the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be. You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some icons are locked in place.

There is also a Restore Defaults button at the bottom middle.

I see that you have the New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) 2.1 (newtaboverride@agenedia.com) extension.

The latest version (2.0+) of New Tab Override isn't compatible with Firefox 43. That version uses the aboutnewtab-service component that will be available in Firefox 44 and later. The Browser Console shows an error message about this issue.

You can install the version 1.1 from the version page as that version is still working.

FredMcD: I mentioned in my question that the cog was not in the customize window.

cor-el: I had disabled that add-on after I sent my question. Sorry. Am not sure I really needed it.

Both: I discovered something interesting. Turned out it was the theme "Nautipolis for Firefox" that was had substituted the Open Menu icon of the 3 horizontal bars for the cog for some reason. I didn't realize that since I was looking for the cog. When I went to the "default" theme the cog showed up. They both only show three options. Top sites, suggested sites and blank page. No option for removing all thumbnails. I know I saw that somewhere. Probably in the Learn about the new tab option. But I called up that page and cannot find a remove all thumbnails option anywhere. So now it appears I have no choice but using the blank page. Is aggravating but not the end of the world by any means. Lastly the default theme only calls up 8 thumbnails whereas the Nautipolis theme calls up a LOT of thumbnails & it takes some time to remove them all.

Thank you both for replying. Maybe my info here will be of some help to others that cannot find the cog. Can I delete my question?

cor-el... Would New Tab Override v1.1 resolve the problem I'm having with NewTabUrl in Firefox 43?

With Firefox 41 (and higher), it's no longer possible to customize the page shown in a new tab via changing the preference browser.newtab.url in about.config. Because of the fact that hijackers abused the preference in the past, Mozilla decided to remove it (see bug 1118285). Fortunately, by removing it, Mozilla also introduced a new API to bring this functionality back to life as an add-on. This add-on allows the user to choose a certain page in a new tab.

New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

This is also available using Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) {web link} Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more on Australis UI (Windows/MacOSX/Linux + Fx 29+).
