Lost sent tab on upgrade

Hi there,

I recently went on vacation and sent a few tabs to a profile on my desktop. Upon my return, I opened firefox on my desktop and it applied the 63.0.1 upgrade, then showed the regular firefox window. In the window, it showed 4 tabs (but not my previous session as it normally does). Each tab had the title of the URL. The tab that was shown just showed gray without loading the page. I couldn't switch tabs or really do anything in firefox. I restarted firefox, which showed the same 4 tabs, same titles, same gray, same inability to switch tabs. So I closed firefox, restored my firefox profile from a backup, and started firefox. (I didn't backup the broken profile first.) Now it opened my previous session (but not any of the sent tabs).

How can I recover the sent tabs that were lost?

Hi Jayen, I'm not sure how sent tabs work. Are these sent via your Firefox Account that you use for Sync? In that case, can you find anywhere to see the sent tabs on the device from which you sent them, whether in your history or elsewhere?

For future reference:

If there is a problem with a session not being restored, please try:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Restore Previous Session
  • (menu bar) History > Restore Previous Session

If they are missing or grayed, check either:

  • "Library" toolbar button > History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)
  • (menu bar) History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)

If that doesn't help...

Firefox creates numerous session history files, but because session history is only for the immediately previous session, it is unfortunately too easy to lose it. Back up your current session history files as follows:

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" or "Open Directory" button.

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location.

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update
  • various .js files from Firefox 55 or earlier

I assume sent tabs are sent via my Firefox account that I use for Sync, as when I send tabs, it lists all the profiles connected to my sync account. I can find the tabs in my history, for sure, but there's so much stuff in the history that I don't remember which 4 pages I wanted to send myself.

Thanks for the items for future reference. I'll try those in the future instead of just restoring the profile.
