Firefox 3.0.19 on Kubuntu9.04 (jaunty) keeps crashing when I try and download files. I have tried deleting downloads.sqlite. I have also tried creating a new profile. Neither has helped.

If I right click on a link and choose "Save link as" I can download files. But If I left click on the link the downloader menu does not appear and Firefox completely shuts down.

Your plugins list shows outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.

  1. Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32

Update the Flash plugin to the latest version. See http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears. You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions. You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Thanks,

Firefox is still crashing. I have disable the plugins themes and extensions. I have installed a newer version of Flash player. Running Firefox in safe mode from the console did show a number of problems. I kept getting the message:

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module": /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

This did not cause a crash. If I attempt to left click on a download (ie http://mirrors.dedipower.com/ftp.apache.org/httpd/httpd-2.2.15.tar.gz) a crash does happen. Safe mode reports that a segmentation fault has occurred. This happens for all files that bring up the download menu.

I went to Youtube to test out the old Flash player. It worked and a video played, but I got the message:

(npviewer.bin:4272): Gtk-WARNING **: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/libqtcurve.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

You seem to be missing 32 bit versions of those libraries and Firefox tries to use 64 bite versions. Make sure that you have the 32 bit GTK+ libraries installed.

I met a similar issue when using firefox 10.0.4 in linux x86_64 platform.

Firefox 10.0.4 crashes when I try to download files directly or using left click on the link, but if I use right click on the link and "Save link as" then everything goes well.

By the way, I build the firefox from source code. One is compiled in linux i686 platform, and it does not occur such issue, and firefox does not happen "segmentation fault" issue. The other one is compiled in linux x86_64 platform, and this one will happen "segmentation fault" issue when trying to download files directly or using left click on the link.
