I can't use the Norton Toolbar on Firefox 4.0 because it says they're not compatable... how can i get them to work?

The Norton toolbar and the last Firefox i had worked fine together, however, when i updated Firefox, as the information was transferring, it told me that I could no longer use the Norton toolbar because they weren't compatible. It said this even though both of them are updated.

You need to contact Norton about their plans for supporting Firefox 4. It is quite common for companies to only support a new version of a browser after it has been officially released, and not support it during the beta/release candidate phase.

Yeah, I am not waiting for May. I am going to reinstall firefox version 3.6. I will update firefox when the fix is in..

I half-heartedly agree that Norton needs to update their product to allow the toolbar to work properly, but hopefully Mozilla learned a lesson here. After you install an update is too late to learn what won't work. They should have made it obvious in a release memo that there were going to be incompatibilities.

Hopefully Symantec can respond before May. Until then you can look at the logins and passwords by bringing up Internet Security (or whatever else you use) and make a list of your somewhat less common ones.

A pain, but it will have to suffice until everything gets back is synch again.

To me, it's a better option than using Internet Explorer!

Tony E. Surprises are not nice. This surprise was nasty. I did not appreciate this nasty surprise and it looks like several other users didn't either. I will uninstall 4.0 until firefox fixes the compatibility problem. Let me know (I signed up for an email) when you get it right. Next time tell us before we click the installation button what add-ons will not be compatible with the new version. Until then: fool me once, shame on you--fool me twice, shame on me. I will never again download a firefox update without checking the support pages first.

Just in case I didn't make myself perfectly clear: this colossal waste of my time is bordering on a deal breaker on my using firefox which has been my browser of choice for the last 5 years. Wake up Tony E.

If anyone wants it, I have a copy of 3.6.3. I simply re-installed it and re-added the plugins I lost with v4. Let me know with an email address and I'll send a copy. It's 8+ MB

TonyE we appreciate all your efforts for helping people around. Sorry but the way you replied for this question was insulting rather then supporting. We must be polite and supportive rather then using insulting language. People comes here just to seek help and they will stay only if they get what they want in respective way. Otherwise, we all knows there are many browsers around.

Now, as you must have understood that FF made a blunder and you supported them. We expect some official apology from FF for torturing so many fans around the globe. You too must apologies for your insulting words.

I agree with both of the above answers...Yet, there must be a workaround that you could adopt so that the Norton toolbar could be used...until and unless you could build a release 4.1 or whatever to do the real job...You must have dozens of quality software engineers who could solve this problem...just do it!!!...and stop whining about whose responsibility it is...

No, Norton 360 identity safe doesn't work with it, nor does Norton Internet Security 2011.

Norton posted the following notice three days ago. However, when I spoke to a rep on the phone today he said the update would be available at the END of May. But at least we know they're working on it!

We plan to release an update for NIS/NAV 18.5 and Norton 360 v5 in early May that will address the problems found in both Internet Explorer 9 and FireFox 4. We’re still working on this patch, and testing it thoroughly. Thank for all your help in identifying the issues between the products; that has certainly helped us in resolving these compatibility issues.

We will be releasing patches for a few older versions of NIS/NAV and Norton 360, but these patches will take longer to test and release. We recommend that you update to the latest version. Reverting to Firefox 3 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html] worked for me. The Norton Toolbar etc seem to be working fine. Norton suggests that they expect to fix the compatibility issue in early May link text

I need a little help with uninstalling Firefox 4 and reinstalling 3.6. In the instructions that are posted it says to delete 4 and install 3.6. And then the last paragraph states that "To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf etc. etc. At what point am I suppose to do this? And is it necessary for the best end results? I'm really worried I'll screw something up and have a giant mess and not able to use my computer!!!

I, too, had the same problem with Firefox 4.0 so I downloaded 3.6.16 and, after uninstalling 4.0, fired up the older version. However, even though my Norton 360 toolbar shows up in the list in Firefox of installed extensions, it does NOT show up in Firefox itself. I checked in "View-Toolbars" and it is not there either. I was forced to abandon Firefox altogether and go back, reluctantly, to Internet Explorer as the functionality with Norton is a deal-breaker for me. If I had just known not to install 4.0 due to its lack of interactivity I could have been happy with my older 3.6.12. I will, however, continue to monitor both Mozilla and Symantec and if a solution is devised, I will happily return to Firefox as I have used it almost exclusively for over a year.

I went to my download folder where I had save the 3.6.9 upgrade. I did not uninstall 4.o. I clicked on the 3.6.9 upgrade. I then clicked run. Everything went back to working on 3.6.

I called Norton the other day and was told a fix is in the works; scheduled for May release. Will be included in automatic update.

Mozilla has "towed the company line" with previous versions of Firefox which did not work with Norton either, at first. And they are, in fact, excuses. I downloaded the new IE and my Norton toolbar worked right away, didn't have to contact Norton or Microsoft. I use Firefox exclusively since I have always liked the speed and personalized themes, but as usual, I will be using IE (uuugh!) until Mozilla catches up like last time. Instead of making excuses again, just step up and make it work.

When we are uninstalling the Famous 4.0 and go back to 3.xxx it seems we are having some problems. Try to uninstall everything including your REGEDIT if you are sure how to do it or don't take chances.

If you people keep beating up on the volunteers who come here to help you, someday there might not be any experienced Firefox users left here to help you.

The extensions API for Firefox 4.0 was locked down over 5 months ago so that security vendors could start working on updating their products for the release of Firefox 4.0. Symantec / Norton pulls this crap of waiting until the last minute for every Firefox major release (like they're surprised by the release of a new version), inconveniencing their paying customers by making them wait a month or two while they get their shet together.

Those Norton clowns just can't see their way clear to just support the browsers that their users want to use, they always want to roll the update for Firefox into a new release of theirs and then charge users for the new version. (They claim they are extending your existing agreement, but from some of the reports I have read, they don't really do that.)
