I've updated Firefox about a dozen times now and it keeps reverting to 3.65 and telling me I should update. What a waste of time. Is this a common problem? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.

I've been getting messages from Firefox that I should update since Firefox Version 4. I've tried to update 2 or 3 times on each firefox version. It typically completes and shows me that I'm updated. But the next time I start firefox, it's back to version 3.6.23 again and telling me I should update. I feel like I'm in Groundhog Day. I remember updating this computer to Firefox Version 4, Version 5 and yesterday to 7.1. What is going on?

The More system details list posted in the first post doesn't show any relevant changes to general.useragent prefs, so you probably didn't update and still run the Firefox 3.6.23 version.
You can check that via the Help > About window.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
  • Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Your UserAgent string in Firefox was messed up by an addon that you installed. -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Agent

Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page. Filter = general.useragent. Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset. Then restart Firefox

I have hundreds of lines bolded -- I reset them one at a time until I got about half way done then hit hundreds of printer configuration lines to reset. Can I just delete the lines instead? I'd rather uninstall firefox and reload it from scratch than go through this line by line procedure which apparantly kills any of my customizations anyway.

Put general.useragent. in the Filter box at the top of the about:config panel. That will sort the display to show only those prefs.

that narrowed it down! Thanks. I did that and then restarted firefox. It still came up as the 3.x version. I went to the control panel to delete the 3.6.23 version and found that I had both the 3.6.23 and the 7.01 versions installed. I uninstalled the 3.6.23 and then was able to run the 7.01 version without reinstalling it. So I think the problem is finally solved. Thanks!
