Firefox can find extensions in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" extension folder used by some third party installers. There are a couple of workarounds:

(1) Copy the extension to the new location (this may require creating a new folder). This thread on the avast! forum has the steps: AdBlocker disappearing in FF 21???

Edit: Here's a more direct link to the post way down the page: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=124075.msg940953#msg...

(2) Switch to AdBlock Plus, which is the core source used by avast! (according to this thread on the avast! forum Is AdBlocker compatible with lastest Firefox 19.0.2?). You can install AdBlock Plus from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

Any luck?
