Is there a Firefox add-in that's causing Gmail notifications to pop up in the corner of my desktop screen?

more options

I have eliminated other potential causes of these popups by

  • Logging into Chrome to see if desktop notifications were turned on
  • Checking to see if the Gmail Notifier program was installed--it was not

Gmail suggested that I "disable any Firefox add-ons that send notifications about Gmail messages."

I checked my Firefox add-ons, but I don't recognize any as relating to Gmail.

To see whether it is a Firefox extension, could you try Firefox's Safe Mode? More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Does the notifier vanish? If not, you might have a Windows application that is generating the popups.

Thank you! This helped me eliminate Firefox add-ins as the cause because the notifier did not vanish.

Sometimes if you right-click an icon in the System Tray/Notification Area you can get more information about the responsible program, but if that isn't useful, you could check your start-up list to see whether that helps you track it down. Microsoft has a handy utility for that named Autoruns: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sy.../bb963902.aspx.
