Since a recent update, the search box now has a green magnifying glass icon sometimes, depending on what page I am on. When you click it it says stuff like "Add Mozilla Support" or "Add youtube search".

I don't want this feature showing at all. At best it is of no use to me and at worst I will go adding search providers by mistake with misclicks.

How can I turn this thing off? thx

This isn't a new feature - it's been in firefox for a really long time.

Do I understand correctly that that says I have to in my case edit the searchbar.css file that is inside the nasanightlaunch jar file?

No, you can create a chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder and a userChrome.css file within this chrome folder.

I've updated this reply:

user293, you must not understand what I mean, because this particular thing is brand new this past week. (I guess you think I am talking about a closely related thing, because I know that most of the way it is now has been this way for a while.)

Thanks cor-el, that totally fixed it.

Although I am dismayed that it's not just a search option and requires user hacking.

What? The "green plus sign" on the magnifying glass is absolutely brand new. I don't want it either. I just want a simple box. Another annoying thing with the new search box is that it automatically drops down another box and duplicates everything I type, even though I only have one search engine (Google). At one point I even got a suggestion to add an engine I've never even heard before. That hasn't been repeated, but it was very weird. And it showed up in the drop-down box, tied to the actual search box.

I don't want any of that. I want an empty box. No drop downs, no suggestions, no help of any kind. I've been online since before the modern GUI internet and can type 80WPM. I know what I'm looking for, know how to spell, and I don't need any help. I grow frustrated very quickly when people try to force and hold my hand. That is the only reason I've used Firefox all these years. You can turn off most of the annoying crap fairly easily. Somebody has a fix?

I agree with these users. Who asks for these "enhancements?" Just please quit constantly changing things!
