When you get to the Search section of the Options page, is Google still selected?

If so, this could be an odd behavior of the drop-down panel below the search bar: if you click in the search bar using the mouse, type your query, and press Enter to run it, sometimes Firefox sends your search to the page which is below the mouse pointer instead of where you expect it to go. Usually this only happens if you move the mouse, even a tiny bit; Firefox interprets that movement as a signal of what you want to happen when you press Enter.

This is a hard issue to work around if you are working quickly. One option is to use custom style rules to hide that bottom choice ("Change Search Settings") so it can't be accidentally activated. In this thread, we had a discussion about that option but you don't have to use that one, a volunteer can customize a rule to your requirements: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1088684#answer-794016

Hi Drucifer

What search engine gets set as the default search engine?

Is that a built-in search engine or one that is installed by you or other software (malware)?

Hi Drucifer, do you have the same setting pop-up issue as the original poster in this thread?

If not, please start a new question and describe the problem you're having in more detail. In particular, please describe when the setting changes. For example:

  • Setting changes during my session, immediately after or shortly after selecting the preferred default
  • Setting changes when exiting out of Firefox and starting it up again (i.e., between Firefox sessions)
  • Setting changes when shutting down and restarting Windows

These can indicate very different culprits.
