Is it possible to configure TB so that calendars can be included in the folder pane, and when selected the calendar is displayed in the message pane? (i.e. similar to Outlook)

At the moment I can onyl see the possibiliuty of opening the ca;lendar in a new tab via the menu toolbar

No this is not Outlook. The closest thing in Thunderbird is turning the Today Pane on.

I did see it mentioned here - https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Folder_Pane#Contacts.2C_Calendar.2C_and_Tasks , but I guess it never got past the spec phase
