What happens is, I use IMAP.

When I _ARCHIVE_ it places the email on the IMAP server location, which is on the remote server.

If I delete these messages off the remote server, they are deleted LOCAL as well.

How do I ARCHIVE LOCALLY on a local drive, and keep this separate from the IMAP account by pressing the ARCHIVE button>?

You'll have to specify the desired archive folder in the account settings for the IMAP account. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/archived-messages

..... I don't want it archived via IMAP though.

How do I archive it on the local drive?

more options

By specifying a folder underneath your Local Folders account as archive folder for the IMAP account.

OK so, do I have to manually move my current LOCAL FOLDER to the new hard drive with the file explorer?

more options

I don't understand what you're talking about. Your question was about archiving. Please follow the instructions in the support article given above. I have no idea how that is related to a new hard drive.

more options

It's related because if I just change the location of the ARCHIVES it does not copy the data to the new directory location.

Do I have to manually copy the data to the new location?

I just change the location of the ARCHIVES

Please explain what that means and what exactly you did.

You didnt quote the whole sentence.

If I change the local area drive location, my files don't move with it.

So, after I moved the LOCAL FOLDER to a new drive location and pointed the local folder to that directory, it began showing a ton of TMP Files as folders. Example:

~gvf4a5U.tmp

but like 50 of them

If I change the local area drive location

I'm not guessing what that means. As stated before, please explain in detail what you did, and how you did it.

..............its in a new location on the drive

I moved the folder

I'm not following your arbitrary actions, nor do I understand what you're trying to achieve. It certainly isn't related to your original question about archiving. I'd therefore suggest you reverse any changes you made with regards to

  • change the location of the ARCHIVES,
  • change the local area drive location,
  • moved the folder.

If you're still having problems after that, please start a new topic. Good luck.

This was completely worthless discussion. Its not my fault if you can't follow along when something else relevant to the question is discussed.

Next time, don't reply to my question on here. I want someone competent.

You're welcome.

If I may, I'd like to comment that I think the misunderstanding is because all of Thunderbird, IMAP, support community and, yes, the original question owner are being ambiguous with the word "local". In passing I'd also comment that TB archiving is generally poorly explained 9which is why I arrived here).

My reading of the discussion is that the question is effectively asking: - If I set up archiving in TB under IMAP, it sets the Archive folder as part of the IMAp account structure - But I want it to be both on my local disk AND not managed (ie deleted) by IMAP sync - The answer may be to put the Archive folder under the TB "LOCAL FOLDERS" structure (which from other Help sources seems to be outside the control of IMAP) - That makes sense BUT simply amending the archive folder location option in the settings doesn't move the existing archive (I guess it puts future archived messages there though) - So the supplementary question became: if I change the archive location option/parameter, do I then need to manually copy/move the existing Archive from under the IMAP account structure into the TB LOCAL FOLDERS structure.

And from my limited knowledge, I'd guess you do need to manually copy the existing archive from the IMAP structure into the new Archive in the LOCAL FOLDERS structure.

Original questioner, main respondent and anyone else is welcome to correct or confirm this.
