When I attempt to search with Firefox the answers are defaulted to yahoo/avg. I have disabled the avg tool bar and called their service rep who suggested that I upgrade to avg 10 and the problem would be corrected. Wrong. The yahoo search bar is imbedded in Firefox.

Just found the solution here.

Type about:config into the address field.

Click OK, or something similar, when it prompts you that you are entering the advanced settings.

Type in keyword.URL in the Filter, at the top.

Double click it, and enter http://www.google.com/search?q=

And thats it.
