FF 8 suddently starts adding blank tabs until max tabs reached

After downloading a file, FF 8 suddenly start adding empty tabs until an overflow occurs. Also the download does not go into the specified download directory. FF 8 will not allow me to choose my own start page. Is there a way to totally remove FF 8 and start over? Comment: Using the same firefox.exe and restarting WIN XP as ADMINISTRATOR, then I can change all user options. Some file keep forcing all the defaults on my FF 8 when logged on as myself. No problem with Chrome of Internet Explorer. PLEASE SENT SOLUTION TO: jbram@jbram.net

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file if you get an "open with" dialog.
