FireFox releases including 18.0 and 18.0.1 are horribly unstable and immediately crash when launched with hardware acceleration enabled. Firefox 17.0.2 is fully functional with hardware acceleration enabled, although strangely 17.0.2 is slower and less responsive than the 17.0.1 version of FireFox.

I have the very latest nvidia and intel video drivers installed onto 64 bit Windows 7.

I have an ASUS laptop with nvidia optimus video. ASUS UX32VD-DB71

Intel HD Graphics 4000

NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M

Conclusion: FireFox hardware acceleration in version 18.0.1 and 18.0 is broken and not ready for release to public.

hello bluetickle, i've incorporated your previous findings about the issue into a bug report that was filed for this kind of signature, but there hasn't been any development on it since.

if you want, you could also post your system's details and some of those crash ids into bug #829508, maybe it helps speeding things up a bit...

One difference between the information from this finding and the other finding is the nvidia driver is newer.

I haven't found it yet, but I believe the solution may be somewhere in:

nvidia control panel/ manage 3d settings/ program settings/ mozilla firefox

Nvidia optimus is the software that manages which GPU driver is used, and the settings at the above path have paradoxical results.

I wanted to give it a little time to make sure but version 18.0.1 has stopped crashing for me. I'm not sure why, but I think it was related to pressing the "Restore" button located in the nvidia control panel. Or it could be a coincidence, I'm not sure.

nvidia control panel/ manage 3d settings/ program settings/ mozilla firefox

bluetickle - thank you, I had exactly the same problem and that fixed it :) I had set FF to use the NVIDIA GPU because that way scrolling was a bit smoother. After restoring the settings, everything is back to normal. The only issue is that now it uses the Integrated graphics (HD4000) and scrolling is a bit choppy. Any ideas on that?

I can tell you right now something is wrong with Firefox & Nvidia driver. I am experiencing slow issue especially noticeable with jerking of the mouse.

FF17 no issue, FF18 with latest nvidia drivers slow issue, then while on FF18.0.2 then latest nvidia driver came out 314.07 the issue seems to be fix at least until FF19 came out then issue is back!

Currently running Windows 8 Pro Media Center 64 bit Firefox 19.0 Nvidia driver 314.07
