ff lost my tabs -- get them back

no session restore button on start page

restore previous session option is inactive on history button

i dont know if ff updated to new version

i just want my tabs back

tools - options - general still shows 'restore windows and tabs from prior session' but it didnt happen

also gone is the page with nine thumbnails to open preselected pages

if i go back to an earlier version of ff will my tabs reappear?
