How can I prevent the browser to open new tabs when clicking on links on the search results page? Open search result in new tab I can simply pressing control + click. Very inconvenient when useful of search results is a single link. But in their browser opened two tabs, one of them - a search query.

Note that you are using the Firefox 45 DE version that might behave differently than the current release.

Did you try to clear the Google cookies?

Did you check the prefs on the about:config page?

1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;

0:divert always; 1:divert never; 2:divert only if not specifying dimensions

Often search engines have an internal setting to code links to open in a new window (which Firefox diverts to a new tab instead by default).

If it's Google, could you check this page: https://www.google.com/preferences

If it's DuckDuckGo, could you check this page: https://duckduckgo.com/settings

If it's another site, please check the settings available from the results page to see whether the site is set to launch results in a new window.

Was it that?

jscher2000, thanks! It's Google. The settings page of the Google search contains only one switch for "Open results": this is "in new window".

The settings page in my language - http://i.imgur.com/Cdil0uQ.png My browser - FF Dev Ed v. 45.0a2

In FF 43.0 settings page also has a single check box "in new window". Regarding the tabs do not find any settings ...

Hi Val_Ery, Firefox's setting to divert new windows to new tabs instead should not cause this problem. I have attached a screen shot of the setting I see in Firefox 43. Is it different in your version?

There are some tab-related extensions which include options to modify links on sites. Could you check your Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then review the list on the right side to see if any are tab-related, or try their individual Options/Settings buttons.

cor-el! Hello and thank you!

I knew that DE behaves slightly differently than a normal browser. But differences in behavior can not understand. With the same settings 43 FF works as it works. But FF DE links from Google search opens in new tabs...

He has another problem, which I don't know how to resolve. But it is not a question for this topic.

Regarding my problem. Thank you! Changed the parameter browser.link.open_newwindow in about:config from 3 to 1. The problem is solved! Thanks!
