outgoing emails have unrecognised name. Why?
If I send an email and check the 'sent' file it all looks fine. But when the other person replies, the system says my message has come from another user with the same address. For example, account is configured to set the reply address to be "BMTC <bristolmtc@btconnect.com>". When you hit reply it says the message has come from "Carol Williams <bristolmtc@btconnect.com>". There is no trace (that I can find) of any occurrence of this name. Any suggestions as to where it is coming from?

Check you do have the correct display name in your address book.
Thanks for getting back to me. There is no carol listed in any of the address books. If I created an entry for BMTC would it pick that up?
Just ran a test. I created an address book entry for BMTC. Sent a message to myself. The entry in the 'sent' folder shows the message being from BMTC to BMTC. When I click on reply, the message shows Carol Williams.
So do we know this carol williams?

Make sure to check all address books, including Collected Addresses.
Also verify the 'Reply-To Address' in your account settings.
Matt,
There isn't, and never has been, anybody with that name here. If I could find it in a setup or config file then I could replace it. But can find no trace of her.
Chris1,
Have both searched, and manually checked all address books. The reply-to field in account settings also has the correct name.
I am at a loss on where the system is getting the name from.
I had a feeling you would say that. You are using a bt internet address, they are supplied by Yahoo, so I will hazard a guess there is a web page on BT where you can specify your name and they what is entered there is being inserted when the mail travels out through the Yahoo servers.
Had started to suspect that for myself. Guess it's time to do battle with BT again. Thanks for your help
I have an email I used to send oops to my kids with that had your nightmare as the display name. But only on Yahoo. When I send mail sing that account from Thunderbird, anything I enter in Thunderbird is replaced by what yahoo have.
