I went onto my browser today and all the bookmarks are gone. I followed the procedure to restore them (Bookmarks, Manage bookmarks, Import and Backup, restore) and got and error: Unable to process the backup file. History has also gone and the top sites options on my default tab. I'm less bothered about that, but it may point to a cause.

Please advise.

Very bizarrely, logged in today and everything is back to normal. I have no idea why. This is rather disconcerting and seems to be a recurrent problem. Can someone explain how to backup my bookmarks myself, as I feel rather uncomfortable about this right now.

There are several possibilities. If the issue should return, please let us know.


  • Sometimes there is a problem with the profile, so the browser creates a new one.
  • The browser can't find the profile and creates a new one.
  • You have more than one profile and the browser loaded the wrong one.

and so on . . .

I currently have 4 profiles. One was modified yesterday morning. I loaded the browser in the afternoon and had the problem. There is another one which was modified today, so that could have fixed the problem. The time is set for this afternoon, but perhaps it has been modified a number of times since I've been on.
