Unable to log into Firefox Sync

I recently got all new devices and traded in my previous ones and when trying to login to Firefox Sync, I can sign in successfully but then I’m required to provide the 6-digit code that is sent to my email. I am unable to login to my email because the password in stored in my Firefox Sync saved passwords.

Attempted to reset my email password (Gmail) but I need to enter the last password that I used, which I have no idea since I’ve always used Firefox Sync and all I get from Google is “we are unable to verify this account belongs to you”. So not much traction on gaining access to my email account.

In my mind, I assumed that by utilizing Firefox Sync as a form of a password manager, I wouldn’t be in this situation as long as I knew my Firefox Sync password. I have since learned otherwise. I can sign-in on accounts.firefox.com but of course making any change requires that I put in the code that was sent via email.

I attempted to download Lockwise and again prompted to enter the code sent via email.

So at this point, I’m just wondering if I’m out of luck and although I know my password to my Firefox account that I’ll be unable to regain access to it or my email because I can’t access the 6-digit code being sent to that email.

Any additional support or suggestions are appreciated but I feel like I’m unfortunately at the end of the line here on what else could be done.

Oh, sorry! It's under

~/Library/Application Support/Firefox

but I don't know the full details of how to access hidden folders from backups.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Fred, While I appreciate this information in future, I don’t believe you read my post in its entirety. The issue is that I cannot access my account on new devices, so any method of “password recovery” with the long list of tools that you provided will be useless.

I’m more so looking for support on any way to access the account.

No file backups from your old devices? You may need to work with Google on some kind of emergency account recovery.

I’m currently trying to restore from an old backup of my computer where I believe I was signed into Firefox Sync. Finger crossed on this attempt.

It doesn't matter whether you were signed in, all the data was stored locally. Set Windows to show hidden files and folders in order to explore:

This folder has the important stuff:

\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

Any chance you know the path on Mac?

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. One location for your personal data (e.g. bookmarks) and another location for temporary files like the disk cache.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>

In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the "~/Library" folder in the Home directory is a hidden folder.

Perfect! I was able to get my profile folder copied over into my new copy of Firefox and log back into everything.

Time to get some additional recovery options setup on these account. Thank you so much for the help!!
