Issue

I have another kind of problem with Firefox

Description

FF 3.6.3 gave me absolutely no problems, and with considerably more extensions installed. After letting 3.6.4 automatically update, the browser hangs every time I load the Tools-->Options menu. Sometimes I have to click through a few of the choices to get a hang, but it's bound to happen after only a few clicks through the browser's options.

I tried uninstalling the browser and all user customizations, then re-installing 3.6.4 from scratch, but with the same results. Using the -safemode options with everything checked didn't get me any farther. Ideas?

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

after updating from 3.6.3 to 3.6.4

Also hangs if I start up in safemode with all the boxes checked...

I grabbed 3.6.6 and it's the same thing. Reverted back to 3.6.3 until another release and will try again.

More detail on the hang:

Going to Tools --> Options will most often load that panel, but not always. If it does load, clicking on the "General" button is guaranteed to make FF hang. In 3.6.4, I let FF sit for quite a while before it finally generated a crash message related to the plugin container, but I don't remember seeing that process running in Task Manager.

In 3.6.6, I tried disabling the container altogether by setting "dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutsecs" to -1, but no dice there either.

Also same problem.. *sighs* I removed all addons theme and plugins. cleared the appsettings folder, registry, reinstalled it etz. But as soon as I hit the options menu ff hangs.

I have the same problem in 3.6.6, as well. I'll also be reverting back to 3.6.3 until this issue is fixed.

I have the same problem with Firefox 3.6.6, Windows XP.

I tried with a clean profile, and also with the safe mode problem continues. It hangs specifically on "Applications" and "General" tabs. I also can not download or save any file.

It seems that killing the thread(with procexp) that is in a blocked state (xul.dll! glxWindowsPlatform::FinishLoader/selected one in the screenshot) fixes these problems (and yet also causing others) for that session.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems See [[Basic Troubleshooting|#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting:Make a new profile]] There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files) See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

Thanks for the response, but if you look at my original post, you'll see that I wiped every trace of Firefox from my hard disk. That means:

- gone from the program files directory
- gone from application data directory
- gone from the registry

3.6.8 has the same problem too.

On the strength of Muratcan Atalay's post above, I thought maybe it was a video driver issue. I just updated my drivers but alas, same problem.

Please let us know if there's an actual diagnostic we can run to help Mozilla troubleshoot the problem.

I tried one more time to get a solution to this and a user came forward with the following:

I read the thread here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/707893 Mainly I think of the video card, specifically to reduce the hardware acceleration: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/hardwareacc.htm

Since the problem is a hang, not a crash, Mozilla I think does not get automated reports about it. There are several bug reports filed though (comments in bugs should follow the bug etiquette guidelines) I see these at least:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=575787 this one mentions TortoiseCVS - you don't have that do you?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587903 in this bug, a developer requests a stacktrace so that would be one way you could help (the bug has some info on how to create one)

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513092 here, I believe a STR is being requested which seems like an abbreviation for stacktrace also

I was indeed running an older version of TortoiseCVS.

Getting rid of it made the latest Firefox build (3.6.11) fully functional!

Try the suggestions as I did, and then if that doesn't work for anybody else out there, try looking in Mozilla's reported bugs database for info on "hangs" and maybe you'll get a good hit that applies to your sitiuation.

Good luck to those of you still wrestling with this!
