I have tried to clear location bar by deleting but items reappear when I hit the down arrow again. Changing privacy location bar setting to Nothing does not effect the drop downs, they are still there, clearing history doesn't remove them either. Using Firefox 3.6.13

You can set the location bar to only show history, but f you've visited a bookmarked website then you will still see it in the drop down list unless you clear the history for those web pages.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History

Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks.
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar.
This will open the Edit This Bookmark dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark.

Thanks--but these are not bookmarks, no star.

cor-el I take it back. This did work, although I don't know why you should have to obliterate the bookmark just to get an iten out of the location bar.

Makes sense. Thanks for the help!

Hate to bump a seemingly closed post but...Only recently have I encountered this issue. I have for some time now set my option to show 'history' so no bookmarked pages are showing up seemingly at will in the location bar. But in the past two days I can no longer clear my location bar history. Using Tools, Clear Recent History no longer clears it. Cookies are cleared but not the history. Similarly if I delete them individually from the drop down when I go to access more to delete, the same ones are there. My wife has had the same issue for weeks but it just started happening to me.

Just noticed that search history is also clearing as it should. The only lingering malcontent is the history.

Hi FranDaMan,

You would probably do better to start a new thread about your own problem. It may also be worth you taking a look at

In my case, the items in the drop down location bar history had a yellow star. meaning they were bookmarked sites. Per the above, I then deleted the bookmark from my bookmark list then went back and was able to delete that item from the history list. Repeat, rinse. Then changed location bar setting to Nothing. Then went back to my bookmark list and re-listed the bookmarks I had deleted but wanted to keep as bookmarks. Seems to be working now.
