Several changes were made to FF recently. The latest one was an upgrade to FF 29.0 from FF 28. But now one of 2 users displays the wrong shortcuts on desktop. The original shortcuts appear to be missing - instead shortcuts from the other user appear. Is this a result of the upgrade ?

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.

  1. Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
  2. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
  3. Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
  4. Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
  5. Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
  6. After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.

The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

Apparently this procedure will create a new IconCache.db file but not retrieve the original which is my goal. Is this correct ??

However weeks before upgrading to FF 29.0 the defaults in 28 were reset. Old settings were preserved in a folder which still exists on the desktop. However none of the files appear to be the old IconCache.db file. Is there a procedure for using these files to restore the original desktop shortcuts ?

Thanx.

If the icon is corrupted the clearing the icon cache will reset the icon to the default.
If you want to have a specific icon then you will have to change this via the Properties of that shortcut.

The shortcut icons are MISSING (not corrupted). Instead the shortcuts from another user were substituted.

Prior to resetting values in FF 28 and upgrade to FF 29 the original settings data was saved in a fldr (tvq90v16.default) which contains many files & sub-fldrs. Can any of these be used to restore desktop icons to originals ? Thanx.

Not likely. Desktop icons are under the control of the Windows OS and once created have not much to do with Firefox unless they use a Firefox icon from the Firefox program. In case of the latter Windows might possibly reset such an icon if Firefox is updated.
