I am running firefox 38.0.5 on two different platforms. XP SP3 and Windows 8.

Windows 8 seems fine. Firefox closes normally and starts OK.

The same version running on XP seems to have trouble closing. I either get a crash report or when I try to start it, it won't do anything because there is still a firefox process running. If I terminate the process and restart it comes up fine.

This has been going on for a few versions now. It seems changes have been made to bring it up to the new versions of Windows and in doing so, Mozilla has abandoned those of us who are running older hardware with older versions of Windows.

I don't plan on abandoning my XP system. It works fine and I have no reason to throw it out.

If Mozilla can't fix this (which seems to have been going on for some time now), is there an older version I can regress to and eliminate this problem?

Let's see what your crash reports contain.

Please follow the steps below to provide us crash ID's to help us learn more about your crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Do you have the Norton Toolbar in Firefox?

Do you close Firefox using the "red X" button or the menu? Other users who have shutdown problem reporting that using the menu significantly reduced their problems. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button (lower right corner)
  • (menu bar) File > Exit (tap Alt to show the menu bar if it's hidden)
