how can I get rid of the advertising below the emails?
when my emails come in they are listed above the box that will read them. The advertising for Thunderbird doesn't go away unless I am reading an email.

Interesting perspective, but advertising is not really the purpose. It is to educate you the user on features and alert you to serious problem with your version of Thunderbird. However you can set to page linked to to nothing.
On the toolbar
