I have today started to give MOZILLA FIREFOX another try. When I first started I checked Pulgins , add-ons, and defaults and other setup items. At the add-ons page it tells me that I need to “Update Now” and I click it and it takes me to “Add-ons” page whereit tells me that, “Old versions of the Adobe Reader plugin have known vulnerabilities. All users are strongly recommended to check for updates on our plugin check page.” And I click on “Plugin check page,. When I go through the process it tells me that, “You are using an older version of Firefox”. I have been through the steps 4 times now, shutting down Firefox, restarting my computer, and everything I’m instructed to do and it still tells me, “You are using an older version of Firefox”. What gives? Your cooperation on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Gary M. Ball

Hi Gary, it's true, you are using an older version of Firefox. The reason for this is that Microsoft has changed how software needs to be packaged, so users on XP and Vista are getting an old installer, and then you need to update from inside Firefox using the "About Firefox" dialog.

This article has the steps: Update Firefox to the latest release.

So please use that method and take care of that first.

Then regarding your Adobe Acrobat plugin, unfortunately, Adobe does not support a newer version on Vista. You can install a newer version by telling Adobe's site you have Windows 7 if you like; at least then your software will be more up-to-date. To get Adobe Reader XI (version 11), you can use this page: https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Note that after using that installer, you will need to run the internal updater in Adobe Reader: Help menu > Check for updates. That's the most convenient way to get patched up to the July 2016 update.
