I want to change spacing in drop-down menus
I use Firefox in the old-fashioned mode with the "File, Edit, View ..." menu visible at the top of the window. When I click on "Bookmarks" there is a lot of white space between the entries. This means I have to scroll down to see some of the entries. This did not used to happen. Is there a way of altering the size of the spaces?
PS. I have tried the various suggestions that involve using the Stylish plugin but none of them work for me. In the postings there is talk of a " bookmarks sidebar". I don't really know what this is. I suspect it refers to the separate "Bookmark" window that one gets when one clicks on "Show All Bookmarks". As I said I'm interested in the drop-down menu from the old-fashioned "File, Edit, View ..." menu visible at the top of the window.

I would say that all of the other old drop-down menus have the same spacing as the "Bookmark" one. Perhaps 'old' is the key here. If I click on the new clip-board-like icon next to the 5-pointed-start icon that will bookmark the current page, the list is nice and compact. If I use the sidebar (ctrl+b) that list is also nice and compact as well.
However your css script does offer a solution. Thanks.

Disclaimer: I'm only familiar with Windows, and other operating systems may space items differently.
That said, are bookmarks spaced further apart them items on the other menus, or are they all about the same?
Assuming you still have stylish, does my multi-column style work on Linux: https://userstyles.org/styles/119797/bookmarks-menu-in-multiple-columns (you can remove it from the Add-ons page, User styles list, after testing)
To answer one of your questions, the Bookmarks Sidebar can be shown/hidden using
- Linux and Windows: Ctrl+b
- Mac: Command+b
Or if you click the bookmarks button on the toolbar, "View Bookmarks Sidebar".

Hmm, possibly the Firefox theme for your distribution has changed, either on Mozilla's end or as a result of something distro-specific packaged into it later. If you find ALL of the menu spacing annoying, someone with more hands-on access probably could figure out a tweak for it.
