While typing an url or a search in the address bar, firefox will propose some predictions from my history or bookmarks, but it will always load the first result while i'm still typing. This is really annoying since it ends up by unselecting the address bar and i end up on a website that i didn't want to.

For example, if I'm typing "php some function information..." at the moment i finished typing php and press the spacebar, I end up on php.net landing page. And if I type a search or an url quickly enough, firefox have loaded 3 or 4 different pages before I stopped typing.

Can someone please tell me how to stop the auto loading and just keep the predictions ? Thanks a lot, and a good day to you all !

That is very unusual. Normally if you were to submit what is being typed in the address bar (using the Enter key or the "go" button), what would get loaded is listed in the highlighted top row of the address bar drop-down (e.g., Visit a site, or submit a search). The default action would never be to load a site further down the drop-down.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? (More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode)

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

@jscher2000 As you suggested I tried to run firefox in safe mode and the problem was resolved, so I checked the add-ons

It was Fastest Search that was causing it if any one has the same issue.

Thank you very much and good day to you.
