thread option in View is greyed out

i am trying to have emails thread by conversation. But when I go to View > Thread to set this up, the Thread option is greyed out.

You need to select a folder. Maybe you selected an account?

But that setting decides which threads to view. More appropriate might be to go to View|Sort By and select "Threaded" there. While there you can also decide how to sort your threads.
