installing the program on the C drive but so that all data and emails are on the D drive - how to do it?
at the moment I normally have Thunderbird installed on the C drive but I need to reinstall it on a fresh system (having previously moved mail settings and profiles to the D drive, the program itself wants it to be on the C drive again), how do I do it?

Are you saying the profile is on drive D? If so, after starting thunderbird, do this:
- click help>troubleshootinginformation
- scroll down to 'profiles' in left side and click 'about:profiles'
- click 'create profile' button'
- click next
- enter short name for profile, such as PROFILED and click the choose button to locate and select the profile on D.
- click finish and then launch
