Auto updating in stages

more options

Hi, I am in a company where there is 100 and more devices with firefox on it. Right now we are facing a problem where some of it are using version way back into the days such as version 100 115 117 and such. We enabled auto updating but it only updates to version 127 whereas the latest version is 132. We are required to open firefox again for multiple time b4 it gets the latest version. Is there any way to jump those stages and straight updates to the latest version?

There but that will be manually installing latest version of Firefox on each computer by network drive where the file is or on USB drive where each is individual installed. But your IT department should be able to download and remote to each computer and remove the older versions to prevent file issue or corruption during install because they are the older version and then reinstall the latest version and then test to see if the configuration is correctly set for all browser to match when launching.

If you want to get the latest should auto-updates doesn't work or not doesn't work correctly this is the direct archive to all versions of Firefox released along with the latest versions.

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

example of latest:

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/132.0.2/

So you should consult or talk to your IT help desk about multiple launch installs to makes this less burdensome.

Unfortunately there are certain versions of Firefox (watershed releases) that for various reasons, a user has to pass through in order to properly get the next update. Sometimes it's related to data formats, other times it's related to certificates.

We do have a background updater, though, and these versions of Firefox should be getting updated that way.

Can you check on a machine that is not updating to see if it is enabled?

Yes I have enabled auto update even when the app is not launched. But when not launching the app it will not auto update and apply update.

I think it would be be best at this point to open a bug in bugzilla and get the update team involved.

Can you do that and paste the bug here for me to follow?

To my knowledge, Firefox's background updater is set by task scheduler where it runs every 7 hours to check and apply update to firefox in the background without user interaction. I tried modifying the time in task scheduler to a shorter time period and it works. With a version 100.0.1 firefox after two runs it would update to version 127 but after the 4th run it still stays at version 127. And more instances of firefox are created in background processes when observing in task manager. I have selected stop existing instance when configuring the task but it still stays the same.

Hi! We would require more information about the issue in order to work on fixing it. As a first step it would help if you could try this on one of machines with an outdated version:

  • Bulleted list itemnavigate to `about:config`.
  • Set app.update.log to true.
  • Open the browser console with the hotkey `Control+Shift+j` (or via Hamburger Menu->More Tools->Browser Console)
  • and then manually attempt an update (e.g. via Hamburger Menu-> Help-> About Firefox).
  • Watch and share what is happening on the console (maybe filter out entries starting with `AUS`).

We usually use bugzilla to track issues like this and if the above steps do not turn out to be sufficient for us to understand the issue you are having, we sometimes require log files to analyze the root cause further (and this platform only allows the attachment of images). To choose the correct component to file bugs against is sometimes not intuitive, but the link above gets you directly to the correct one for these type of issues. Here it is again: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Toolkit&component=Application%20Update
