I have Firefox in my laptop and also mobile phone I was tidying them up last night and they were all on both devices. This morning the most recent bookmarks are missing from both. I tried to "restore" but this still does not bring back my recent bookmarks. Is there any way I can recover them. Many thanks

Unless you have a separate backup of your bookmarks, I am not aware of any way that they could be recovered.

I'm guessing I would know if I had a separate backup as I would have needed to physically do this and my bookmarks wouldn't be automatically bookmarked?

Yes, ideally you would have a backup of your desktop Firefox profile when you do a backup of your laptop or desktop computer. This link will help:
