Get message Software Update, "It is strongly recommended that you apply this update as soon as possible:- it never takes place-! What can be done about this?
Numerous times I get this message about applying the update as soon as possible. It says" Connecting to Update Server"-Downloading Firefox. It runs for hours, but nothing happens. Every time I get online, the message appears, yet apparently the update never gets downloaded. Also, when I try to click on the message that tells me what the download is--- I can't get anything to come up to inform me of this. What is the software update, and why can't I download it?

If the update server is not responding, try downloading the current version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/ and installing it over your current version.
I appreciate your help with this matter. I have downloaded the current version before (have gone through a few different versions: beta-which was a disaster, then when the 4.0 came out, I went to that one too (that is when I kept on getting the message about the Update Server, etc), and just downloaded it again. Time will tell if this corrects itself. I have totally lost my toolbar/apps now whereas in the past it was put back on. Hopefully everything will be okay. We will see. Again, thanks for your help.
You can try to remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

If you have problems with updating to update then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Do a clean (re-)install:
- Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
- Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
- Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
- Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
- It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
Since I recently downloaded a new copy of Firefox 4.0, I will see if this will work before I try too many things at once. I was told before to download this on top of the previous version which I did. I lost my apps and haven't had time to figure out how to get them back! Thanks for your reply. When time permits, I will have to work on finding everything I had before. Previously, they just transferred over to the new version, but not this time.
