I'm unable to get Firefox to start at all; it crashes and won't restart. System is Windows XP. I get the Mozilla Crash Reporter box and click on the "Tell Mozilla...." box and then try to "Restart Firefox" but it doesn't work; I have to click the "Quit Firefox" option in order to submit the report. I tried reinstalling Firefox to get the latest version but it didn't help, it still crashes.

Just some general comments, after a cursory glance.

Are you using the Oracle or IBM products mentioned, if so they may be involved in this problem ?

Have you tried running firefox as the administrator ? Maybe consider starting XP itself in safe mode and with internet access. (the bug suggests that using admin accounts sometimes helps)

If that does not work and you need firefox before this bug is fixed it may be worth considering down grading to Firefox 3.6.23

Also what are the products mentioned, are they currently essential to your system ?

This is a new problem, and as yet there are no indications about how and when it is likely to be fixed.

I'm trying to bring up Firefox on my work PC, which is why those applications are here, but I don't actively use those applications. I can't uninstall them.

Firefox used to work on this PC until this week, so I'm going to try your instructions for going back to an older version of Firefox to see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for sending the link.

Using Firefox 3.6.23 fixed the problem, I'm able to get Firefox back up on my PC. Thanks for the suggestion, John99, and the link for the downgrade.

There is another workaround, it is temporary, and Oracle have apparently been contacted and are working on the problem.

The workaround is also slightly risky as it is a registry edit, users with this problem though will often be able to call on corporate IT support for advice and assistance.

See /questions/880625 for details. And note workaround proposed in Bug 680927 see also https://bug680927.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=563484
